This Guide is bound in two looseleaf notebooks (Part 1 and Part 2). Overall the Guide is organized in four volumes. Volume 1 and part of Volume 2 appear in Part 1, while the remainder appears in Part 2. The material in Volume 1, Principles of Design, outlines the evolving philosophy of approach to geometric design, with a new emphasis on the costs and benefits of safety. The concept of "design domain" is introduced to replace the previous concept of "design standards". Fundamental factors related to driver and vehicle performance impose controls on geometric design. These controls are covered in Volume 1, along with roadway classification and design speed, which are used as a basis for selecting most geometric design elements and dimensions. An updated range of design vehicles is provided and their characteristics are described. New material on design consistency is introduced. Volume 2, Elements of Design, covers the basic elements of roadway geometry - alignments, lane configurations, cross section elements, intersections and interchanges. Volume 3, Special Design Features, includes coverage of design features outside the travelled lanes of a roadway - roadsides, access, streetscapes, bikeways and pullouts (rest areas, bus bays, truck arrester beds, etc.). Volume 4, Supporting Material, includes a bibliography, glossary and index.
